Evidence-Based Practice
Quality Outcomes
Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries in Boarded ED Patients
For my evidence-based practice project, I selected the topic of preventing hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) in patients who experience prolonged boarding times in the emergency department. As an emergency department nurse, I frequently care for patients who remain on stretchers for extended periods while awaiting inpatient bed placement. These patients are often immobile, medically complex, and at increased risk for developing pressure injuries due to prolonged exposure to standard stretcher surfaces.
Through the development of this evidence-based practice question, I gained a greater appreciation for how nursing interventions can directly influence quality outcomes and patient safety. Exploring current evidence regarding pressure injury prevention strategies has strengthened my understanding of how nurses can advocate for system-level changes that improve patient outcomes.
As a registered nurse and Shared Governance Chair in the Emergency Department, I recognize the value of utilizing evidence to guide practice decisions and promote quality improvement initiatives. Overall, this experience enhanced my ability to critically evaluate evidence, apply research findings to clinical practice, and recognize the nurse's role in advancing quality and patient safety.
The AACN Essentials, Applied
BSN Outcomes
The AACN Essentials define the competencies that anchor professional nursing practice. Below, I connect each domain to the way I deliver care every day in the Emergency Department.
Knowledge for Nursing Practice
As an Emergency Department RN, I utilize evidence-based protocols to identify and treat patients with sepsis, stroke, and STEMI — analyzing assessment findings, laboratory values, and diagnostic results to rapidly implement interventions that improve patient outcomes.
Person-Centered Care
When caring for patients experiencing medical emergencies, I involve both patients and families in care discussions whenever possible, tailoring education and communication to their health literacy level and cultural preferences to ensure understanding and informed decision-making.
Population Health
During discharge, I provide education on chronic disease management, medication adherence, smoking cessation, and follow-up care, and connect patients with community resources to reduce preventable ED visits and hospital readmissions.
Scholarship for Nursing Practice
As Shared Governance Chair, I review current literature and evidence-based practices to identify opportunities for quality improvement — recently exploring evidence supporting pressure injury prevention strategies for ED patients experiencing prolonged boarding times.
Quality and Safety
Patient safety is a primary focus of my practice. I conduct fall-risk assessments, verify medications, perform bedside handoff communication, and actively participate in initiatives designed to reduce adverse events. This commitment was recognized through the IRIS Award.
Interprofessional Partnerships
I work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, EMS personnel, social workers, and inpatient nursing staff to coordinate care for critically ill patients and ensure timely interventions throughout the emergency department.
Systems-Based Practice
Through my role on the Senate Advisory Committee, I participate in discussions regarding organizational policies, workflow improvements, patient safety initiatives, and system-level changes that impact patient care and nursing practice.
Informatics & Healthcare Technologies
I utilize the electronic health record to document patient care, review laboratory and imaging results, monitor trends in patient conditions, and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Professionalism
I maintain professional nursing standards by adhering to ethical principles, protecting patient confidentiality, participating in continuing education, and promoting a culture of respect and professionalism within the healthcare team.
Personal, Professional & Leadership Development
Serving as Shared Governance Chair has strengthened my leadership and advocacy skills. I represent frontline nurses, encourage professional development, support quality improvement initiatives, and advocate for changes that improve both patient outcomes and staff engagement.

As the Shared Governance Chair for the Emergency Department at AdventHealth Sebring, I collaborate with frontline team members and leadership to promote evidence-based practice, improve patient outcomes, and foster a culture of accountability and professional growth. In this role, I advocate for staff concerns, facilitate departmental initiatives, and help drive positive changes that enhance both patient care and employee engagement.

Growth Through Reflection
Reflection Papers
Advocacy & Ethical Decision-Making
The ethical case study reinforced the complexity of healthcare decision-making and the important role nurses play in advocating for patients while upholding ethical principles. Throughout the case, I recognized how principles such as autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice guide nursing practice and influence clinical decisions.
As an emergency department nurse, I frequently encounter situations that require ethical decision-making, including issues related to informed consent, end-of-life care, patient advocacy, and resource allocation. Reflecting on this case strengthened my understanding of the nurse's role as a patient advocate and ethical leader. This experience reinforced my commitment to maintaining professional integrity, advocating for vulnerable populations, and ensuring that ethical principles remain at the center of patient care.
Ownership of Practice & Outcomes
Accountability is a fundamental responsibility of professional nursing and requires nurses to accept responsibility for their actions, decisions, and patient outcomes. In the emergency department, accountability means providing safe, evidence-based care, maintaining accurate documentation, following policies and procedures, communicating effectively with the healthcare team, and recognizing when additional assistance is needed.
I demonstrate accountability by ensuring timely patient reassessments, advocating for patient safety, reporting concerns through appropriate channels, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Accountability also involves lifelong learning and professional growth, which I demonstrate through pursuing my BSN degree, engaging in evidence-based practice, and working toward my future goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
